If Central Phoenix has a main street, this is it. North Central runs up the spine of the city — Camelback Road to Northern Avenue, 7th Avenue to 7th Street — and it’s where you’ll find some of the most character-rich homes in the Valley: vintage ranches, classic Tudors, Spanish and Santa Fe styles, and a healthy dose of modern and contemporary. Tree-lined streets, irrigated lots, and a 130-year-old bridle path down the middle. City address, neighborhood feel.

Living Here

Life in North Central happens outside. The Murphy Bridle Path — the shaded dirt trail alongside Central Avenue, laid out in 1895 for the area’s equestrians — is the neighborhood’s shared front porch, busy every morning with runners, dog walkers, and the occasional horse. Saturdays bring the Uptown Farmers Market, and the stretch of Central between Camelback and Bethany Home is one of the best independent restaurant runs in the city. You will not lack for coffee, wine bars, or opinions about which patio is best.

The Homes

North Central homes were designed, not just developed. The core of the housing stock is the mid-century ranch — wide, low, and sitting on lots that often run a third of an acre or more, many with flood irrigation that keeps the grass green and the trees tall. Around them you’ll find Tudors and Spanish homes from the 1930s and 40s, Santa Fe and territorial customs, newer builds tucked onto split lots, and townhomes and condos along the corridor with direct Bridle Path access. What you’re really buying here is land, canopy, and location — three things no builder can recreate this close to the center of the city.

Who It Fits

North Central is for people who want to live in the city without feeling like they live in the middle of one. It draws growing families, professionals, longtime residents who wouldn’t dream of leaving, and buyers moving up from the historic districts who want more house and more yard without giving up the character. The heart of the area sits in zip code 85012, with its edges reaching into 85013 and 85014.

Schools

The Madison School District serves most of North Central and is one of the most consistently sought-after public districts in Phoenix. Just south, Brophy College Preparatory, Xavier College Preparatory, and St. Francis Xavier add long-standing private options. School boundaries shift, so verify current attendance zones for any specific address — I’m happy to help with that.

Getting Around

Downtown is ten minutes south. The Valley Metro light rail runs the length of Central Avenue, connecting the corridor to downtown Phoenix, Sky Harbor, and Tempe — a genuinely useful car-optional option that almost no other established Phoenix neighborhood can claim. I-17 and SR 51 put the rest of the Valley within easy reach.

Want the deeper story on the corridor — the Bridle Path history, the restaurant run, what the city is building next? Read my full guide: Living in North Central Phoenix.
