Willo Historic District

With more than 700 unique homes, the Willo Historic District is one of the largest and definitely one of the most desired bits of Phoenix real estate in the area. You’ll find the oldest homes for sale, Bungalows built between 1920 and 1925, in the southern section of the Willo Histroic District, whose overall boundaries are Central to 7th Avenue and Thomas Rd to McDowell. The remaining Willo real estate was built during the architectural revival movement of the 1930s, making this neighborhood a smoking expo of early twentieth century home styles from Spanish Colonial and Pueblo to American Colonial and Tudor. Later homes for sale (into the ’40s) include French Provincial, Monterey, and Ranch. Best of all, each home is tastefully framed by lush lawns and well-proportioned landscaping, eye-catching window awnings, decorative metalwork, and colorful potted plants.

The Willo Historic District received its status as a historic neighborhood in the late 1980s, reinforcing its stability as a mainstay of aesthetic living in the Valley. But the strongest advocate for the Willo Historic District is the body of friendly, active residents that inhabit, love, and care for this very special patch of real estate. For proof of this, log onto www.willohistoricdistrict.com and read about the neighborhood’s annual events such as the collective garage sale, the breakfast hosted by the local police and fire departments, and the home tour held each February. The tour features about a dozen homes as well as booths offering a chance to sample specialties from local restaurants and shops.

One particular nearby restaurant, My Florist Café at 534 W McDowell Road, embodies the revival spirit of the Willo Historic neighborhood by making use of a now-defunct warehouse-size florist shop, antique light-bulb sign and all. The elegant interior is a great place to relax with a variety of wholesome breakfast, lunch, and dinner items, listen to a live performance at the grand piano, or sip a martini while your nails are freshly manicured. Right next door is the Willo grocery and bakery, offering everything from milk and O.J. to gourmet delicacies, as well as several varieties of bread and delicious cookies and pastries. Also in easy reach of the Willo: The Arizona Science Center, Burton Barr Central Library, Phoenix Theatre, Heard Museum, and the Phoenix Art Museum.
